2) find the message

The images are not only aesthetic, they are concept, message, project, and narrative. Think about the content and the form and their relationship: both have to go hand in hand to enhance the expressive sense. There is a lot of play and experience in experimentation, but it also has to make sense, follow an idea, pose a reflection.

Our approach to experimentation goes through the crossing between disciplines and we will evaluate proposals related to photography,  but also  with  photobooks, cinema, video, architecture, sculpture, dance, cooking, etc., from an experimental point of view. For us, all festival participants are the same and come to share, teach and learn; some giving workshops, others lectures, and others showing their work in exhibitions.

During the last festival, we raised three challenges who will organize the program and all the activities of the EXP. 22. Only proposals consistent and adapted to this collective search will be assessed:

1) mix techniques

How does each of the techniques you know play with the photosensitivity of materials? What if we mix them all together and these with other sciences such as biology, computer science, mathematics, or physics? We will create the images of the future from mixing known aspects until discovering new realities, previously impossible to think.

3) work in community

In our community, we are more than 25 thousand artists and we know each other more and more, but why not write to that person who makes you fall in love with their work to propose to work together? Each artist has their projects and their conceptual and aesthetic searches, but have you ever thought about what would happen if you create something new in dialogue with another person?

General rules.

  • Every year the festival presents new content and protagonists to give space to all members of our community.

  • All selected ones must appear on Tuesday, July 19th, 2022, in the morning at the Centre Cívic Pati Llimona to prepare the workshops, check the materials, review the technical needs and learn about the spaces and the other conferences' participants.

  • Upon being accepted as guest artists, they will be sent a mandatory signature contract with the conditions set forth herein and other details. This contract will stipulate the form of payment of the economic compensation and the transfer of image and intellectual property rights for the Experimentalphotofestival Association.

  • Among guests artists, works of different experimental techniques will be selected to make the official posters for the festival. Our community is built by word of mouth and does not pay for advertising, for which we always appreciate your help with the dissemination in your social networks.

  • The festival does not organize parallel activities during the week before and after the event and we recommend that invited artists don't make plans during those days either.

Workshops and conferences.

The EXP.22 festival opens a free call to select 50 invited artists who want to develop workshops and conferences during the festival. Read carefully the following rules and conditions of participation before submitting proposals:

  • The jury that decides the invited artists is made from all the festival workers. The first selection is made by the festival workers, without the participation of the directors and programmers of the same, so that subjective criteria are not used, and later the proposals that fit into the program are finalized according to the possibilities of the times and the spaces. This double process takes time so we ask for your patience. When we have a decision, we will communicate it to you personally by mail.  The selection will be developed following four criteria in order of importance: 1) adaptation to challenges, 2) gender equality, 3) novelty in terms of the proposal and 4) diversity to have artists from all areas of experimental photography.

  • Each selected artist will develop during the festival two workshops, one of a technique and the other professional (based on the ideas of the challenges: mix of techniques, search for the message and collective work), and a conference or panel discussion on any experimental topic. The techniques workshops will last one session (3.5 hours) and the professionals based on the challenges, two sessions (7 hours, a full day) or three sessions (10.5 hours, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday half-day). The idea is that in the longer workshops the participants have time not only to demonstrate the process but also to create themselves, to obtain a result.

  • To make the proposal, you must download the document (1) to fill it in in detail and upload it along with your personal information in the form (2). It is very important to give all the necessary explanations in it since the successful organization of the 80 workshops depend on the proposals being raised correctly. In it, you will be asked about the activity, the challenge it meets, the necessary conditions of the space (water, electricity, computer, and projector, etc.), and the materials with a budget that you would need for a workshop of 10 people.

  • Each workshop must comply with a budget (50 euros) since all the expenses of the workshops are at the Experimentalphotofestival Association's expenses. In the event that the artist wants to bring his own materials, we can refund the money if they present us with a purchase receipt for the material used. When preparing a proposal, it must be taken into account that the photographic laboratories available are limited, so it is recommended to propose their use only if it is essential. Most of the workshop spaces are classrooms that can be darkened, where there are tables and a projector.

  • Conferences, debates, and project presentations last an hour and a half in a room for 30-70 people with the possibility of projecting images from an Association's computer. In these debates, dialogues between artists or reflections on experimental photography can be raised and are usually developed by two or three artists, according to the proposal of the festival or of the artists themselves. All lectures will be accessible worldwide through the online festival.

  • As our aim is to create a community and to establish a sincere dialogue between all the participants, the guests must be present during all the days of the festival.

  • When planning workshops and conferences, the festival reserves the right to invite participants to take part, explaining their work, without changing their status as a participant.

You must download the form (1), and then submit the application with the following information:

  1. the text of your biography composed of between 250 and 500 words (Spanish and English, if possible);

  2. a PDF dossier about your work;

  3. a selection of 10 of your pieces in JPG (10 MB maximum);

  4. the following form with the proposals in PDF format to carry out the workshops and conferences (with the list and the estimated price of the materials for 10 people);

  5. a high-quality portrait in JPG.

Curators.

EXP.22 opens a call to international curators interested in developing an experimental exhibition in one of the spaces available during our festival. The proposals sent must be conceptual and not be linked to specific artists since the curator will work with the materials of the festival participants themselves. These exhibitions seek to be counter-exhibitions, exhibitions that question the content, format, and form of the exhibitions themselves. All exhibitions are collective and are jointly created by a curator and a interventor that will be selected by the festival. General conditions:

  • The spaces proposed for the exhibitions are the Center Civic Pati Llimona, the IEFC, and a private gallery as yet to be confirmed. The exhibitions will open during the festival and will remain open for a month.

  • The jury is made from the festival directors and workers who will accompany the curators and interventors in their work process.

  • The theme is totally free topic and will be developed from the material sent by the festival participants.

02.OpenCall.jpg
  • Each exhibition will have a maximum budget of 500 euros that is divided between the pre-production expenses incurred by the festival and the production expenses incurred by each curator. The curators and interventors will obtain the same benefits as the invited artists, indicated on this same web page above.

  • In addition to the exhibitions, the curators can propose workshops and conferences or they can be invited by the festival to perform them.

  • The selected artists have to commit to being in the city of Barcelona to carry out the assembly on Monday, July 18th in the morning and to stay until the closing of the festival.

The following form must be attached:

  1. the text of your biography of between 300 and 600 words (Spanish and English, if possible) where your personal and artistic interests are made explicit;

  2. a PDF dossier explaining your curatorial works or artistic career in visual arts including a short CV;

  3. a motivation letter stating the reasons why you want to work in this festival and specifying your curatorial proposal in the following aspects: concepts and theory to work with, ways of exhibiting, technical needs, and an explanation of the use of the budget;

  4. a high-quality portrait in JPG.

  3. The Experimentalphotofestival Association reserves the right to exclude from the festival those dossiers and artists that violate the general conditions of participation or that violate our values, copyright, human rights, or privacy.

  4. The Experimentalphotofestival Association is the organizer of EXP.22III International Festival on Experimental Photography and the Agora of Experimentation, which means that the assignments of rights to the Association automatically allow their use by both events.

  5. The Experimentalphotofestival Association reserves the right to make changes to the program until the last minute and, depending on the evolution of the pandemic, to require a Covid test at the artist's expense to access the festival.
