Analog Film Experimentation

En este workshop trabajaremos de forma práctica el retrato y la narrativa visual dentro del entorno urbano. Nos  centraremos en aprender a leer la ciudad como si fuera un set  fotográfico, identificando micro-localizaciones, fondos y elementos  narrativos. Los participantes practicarán dirección rápida de  retrato utilizando poses sencillas, micro-indicaciones y control del  ritmo, mientras trabajamos también con la luz natural y la profundidad  de campo. El objetivo es entender cómo el entorno, la luz y el gesto construyen la narrativa de una imagen. El  workshop introduce también la construcción de pequeñas secuencias  narrativas de tres imágenes, utilizando objetos urbanos y la  arquitectura como elementos de puesta en escena. La sesión  concluye organizando estos ejercicios en una serie coherente orientada  al desarrollo de portfolio y una revisión colectiva con feedback.

In this session, the structure follows three clearly defined parts that combine technical theory, individual planning, and practical work in the urban space, with the aim of exploring multiple exposure techniques in 35 mm photography. The workshop is designed to move from conceptual clarity to practical execution in real shooting conditions.

In the first part, participants will be introduced to the historical background and technical foundations of multiple exposure, with a detailed explanation of procedures and workflows supported by examples from the instructor’s own work. Techniques addressed include double and multiple exposures, Splitzer filters, DIY constructions, EBS, in camera masks, and filmswap.

In the second part, each participant will define the technique they will apply during the photowalk, shaping the conceptual direction of their project while preparing the necessary materials under supervision. The emphasis is on developing a clear personal strategy before going out to shoot.

The third part consists of a photowalk in the surroundings of the festival, where participants will carry out their individual projects while receiving guidance and feedback. An optional online group review in September will take place once all rolls have been developed and scanned.

En este taller exploramos el Polaroid Emulsion Lift,  una técnica que permite liberar la capa de imagen de la película  instantánea para transferirla sobre soportes inesperados como lienzo,  papel, vidrio o madera. La imagen deja de ser solo fotografía para convertirse en materia. Aprenderás  a manipular la emulsión mientras flota en el agua, descubriendo cómo  sus pliegues, transparencias y rasgados aportan una carga emocional  única. El proceso se sitúa en el equilibrio entre control técnico y belleza del azar. Se  trabajará el proceso completo, desde la apertura de la película y el  control de la temperatura hasta la fijación sobre nuevas texturas. El objetivo es transformar una Polaroid en una pieza de arte objetual.

1. De la foto al objeto: Introducción a la técnica y cómo la imagen se transforma en materia

2. Anatomía de la Polaroid: Estructura del material, seguridad y preparación de los baños

3. El desprendimiento: Demostración guiada de apertura y liberación de la emulsión en agua

4. Transferencia y soporte: Práctica de lift sobre papel de acuarela

5. Laboratorio de texturas: Práctica avanzada sobre lienzo, experimentando con gesto y forma

6. Fijación y archivo: Técnicas de secado y conservación para la durabilidad de la obra

In this workshop, participants will engage in a three part structure combining technical theory, hands on experimentation, and practical shooting centered on filmsoup techniques. The workshop explores the creative potential of chemically altering 35 mm film before exposure or development.

The first section provides a technical introduction to filmsoup, covering its core principles, development considerations, and the differences between scanning and enlarging. It also examines kitchen based and alternative negative manipulation methods and how they can be combined with other experimental techniques.

In the second section, participants will prepare and apply their own filmsoup recipes under guided supervision, translating theory into practice. The emphasis is on understanding how chemical intervention reshapes the visual outcome of the film.

The final section consists of a photowalk around the festival grounds, where participants will develop individual projects using film previously processed by the instructor. The workshop concludes with the option of an online session in September for collective review once the films have been developed and scanned.

En este taller se plantea un recorrido en tres partes que combina teoría técnica, preparación individual y práctica en el espacio urbano para trabajar técnicas de múltiple exposición en 35 mm dentro de un proyecto personal. La estructura está pensada para acompañar el paso de la planificación conceptual a la realización práctica en el espacio urbano.

En la primera parte se abordarán los fundamentos técnicos de la múltiple exposición, explicando el procedimiento paso a paso y mostrando ejemplos del instructor. Se trabajarán técnicas como dobles y múltiples exposiciones, filtro Splitzer, EBS, máscaras in camera y filmswap para comprender distintas estrategias de intervención del negativo.

En la segunda parte, cada participante definirá la técnica que aplicará a su carrete, desarrollando el enfoque conceptual de su proyecto y construyendo los materiales necesarios con acompañamiento técnico y conceptual. Esta fase busca consolidar una propuesta personal antes de salir a fotografiar.

La tercera parte consiste en un photowalk por las inmediaciones del festival, donde cada participante realizará su proyecto individual con orientación durante la toma. El taller contempla además una posible puesta en común online en septiembre tras el revelado y escaneo de los carretes.

In this workshop, participants will engage in a practical exploration of portrait and visual narrative within the urban environment. Through short explanations, demonstrations, and street based exercises, the session focuses on reading the city as a photographic set and identifying micro locations, backgrounds, and narrative elements.

Participants will practice fast portrait direction using simple poses, micro instructions, and rhythm control, while also working with natural light and depth of field. The aim is to understand how environment, light, and gesture shape the narrative of the image.

The workshop also introduces the construction of short narrative sequences of three images, using urban objects and architecture as staging elements. In the indoor phase, these exercises are organized into a coherent series oriented toward portfolio development, concluding with a collective review and feedback session.
