WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO?

This festival is possible thanks to the volunteer work and the collaboration of many people who make the registration fee much lower than the real cost. For us, it is very important to explain where the money of the participants goes because this depends on the sustainability of the festival in the long term.

If the EXP.21 festival is a success of participation, each of the 9 responsible will receive 150 euros for having worked 4 hours a week for 8 months, for which according to the minimum wage in Spain, they should be paid the sum of 950 euros. The directors and the person in charge of the graphic design will be paid 1,000 euros (minus taxes) for working 18 hours a week for 12 months, and they should, in theory, be paid the sum of 5,490 euros each. This means that, on average, the twelve workers will be paid one of every six hours invested in the production of the festival, all the rest is voluntary work. We consider it vital to be able to pay our workers to dignify their work and for them to continue investing their efforts every year in making this an increasingly experimental festival. If the minimum level of participants (240) are not registered to cover expenses, the directors will bear the debt. In our festival, there are 117 people who receive an economical compensation (55 artists, 12 workers, and 50 volunteers) for 240 people who pay to register. For this reason, we cannot make more than a symbolic payment to all of them.

For each registration of 125 euros: 20 euros are paid to the spaces; 17 to the fifty artists to defray their expenses; 14 go to the catalog; 12.5 in the materials are used for the workshops; 9 in bank commissions and financial management; 8 in direction and graphic design; 8 in the objects that the participants receive (bag, program, etc); 8 in the workers responsible for areas; 8 in various aspects (advertising, itineraries, transport, contingencies, meals); 7.5 in exhibitions; 7.5 in streaming for the virtual festival; 3 in the fifty volunteers (who are not paid but are given the products of the festival and given the food); and 2.5 are going to pay the debt of EXP.20.

Do you think it is expensive to charge 125 euros for an inscription? The real cost is 245 euros if all the workers were paid for the hours they dedicated to the festival voluntarily.
