The artist and Professor of Photography at Wayne State University in Detroit, USA, explores the discrepancy between what we see and what we know. She is drawn to photography’s dual role as both an indexical representation of reality and a subjective construction. Her recent work investigates the material properties of photographic objects, the malleability of photographic images, and photography’s role in producing iconic yet clichéd imagery. She examines idealized landscape imagery and its historical connections to expansionist ideologies and gendered gazes. Using techniques like cutting, folding, sewing, and darkroom manipulation, she challenges the illusion of photographs, emphasizing their constructed nature and highlighting the mediation of landscapes through photography.
