Francisco Macfarlane

Germany

A visual artist and photographer whose practice focuses on traditional and experimental black and white darkroom techniques, exploring the material and conceptual boundaries of analogue photography. Through alternative and cameraless processes, he works with organic and inorganic matter to generate images through the interaction of chemistry, light, and materiality. His research examines transformations of human experience in the age of digital hyperconnectivity, addressing immediacy, memory, and the perception of time. He understands photography as a means to reclaim attention, slowness, and physical engagement in contrast to contemporary visual saturation, while also questioning the inflated value of mass-produced digital images. His work proposes a return to the essentials of the medium, where images emerge through organic and uncontrolled processes. He is part of the Stattlab collective in Berlin, where he develops his laboratory practice and research.
