Henri Blommers

Netherlands

A visual artist whose practice combines multiple analogue techniques to develop a form of poetic activism addressing complex issues. A lived experience of housing precarity deepened his engagement with environmental concerns, which form the core of recent projects focused on salinisation and biodiversity loss. His work addresses themes such as sea level rise, its impact on children, and the ability of plants to absorb plastic, translating these processes into material actions including cooking, scratching, applying pesticides and salt, cutting film negatives, and disrupting visual perception. His practice is guided by principles of sustainability, extending beyond thematic exploration to include technical experimentation, working with plants grown in his own garden, sharing ecological and photographic knowledge through talks and workshops at festivals, and collaborating closely with peers and local communities.
