Maarten Rots
Netherlands
A visual artist whose practice explores the sublime details of the everyday and the perceptual ambiguity generated by photographic imagery. After graduating from the audiovisual department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, he shifted his focus from video to photography, investigating the flattened representation of space, depth, and visual perception. Experimentation with the camera lies at the core of his practice, developed through site-specific projects and exhibitions in urban environments. Since 2016, he has maintained a nomadic working approach that sharpens his attention to subtle details within the urban landscape. From 2020 onwards, he has incorporated obsolete materials such as slide projectors and fragments of stained glass to create spatial situations. His work reflects on the human tendency to generate meaning from visual input and on the active role of the viewer in the act of interpretation.
