Creation & Modification of Cameras

Una experiencia sorprendente, fotosensible, pausada, artesanal, respetuosa con el medio ambiente e híbrida entre arte y ciencia. Donde disfrutar de un largo camino en el cual se combinan distintas técnicas fotográficas, analógicas en la captación y digitales en el positivado. Aprenderás cómo captar y positivar sin necesidad de laboratorio químico, los trazos del aparente recorrido del sol día tras día en una sola fotografía analógica. Lo que mágicamente hace visible una bella escena oculta, que el ojo humano no es capaz de captar ni retener por sí solo y con una apariencia pictórica de paisaje onírico. Y partiendo de objetos en desuso, construirás y cargaras tu cámara estenopeica, analógica y especial para solarigrafía “PotCam” (nuevo formato), que te llevarás lista para realizar tus primeros paisajes solares.

Cronograma

1.  Teoría - cámara oscura, fotografía estenopeica y solarigrafía

   • Conferencia teórica con una introducción general: sobre cámara oscura, fotografía estenopeica y profundizando en qué es la solarigrafía y cómo son las cámaras PotCam. Apoyado con proyección de imágenes y objetos físicos.

2. Práctica - construcción de cámara PotCam y de cómo cargarla

   • Taller práctico donde reutilizando materiales en desuso, aprenderás y construirás tu cámara estenopeica y analógica especial para solarigrafía, así como a cargarla, dejándola a punto para captar tu primera solarigrafía.

3. Teoría y Práctica en exterior de colocación y retirada de cámaras PotCam

   • Nos trasladaremos a una zona exterior para hablar de como colocar las cámaras según la localización escogida y cómo proceder para retirarlas de forma práctica, con las que habré colocado unos días o años antes.

4. Teoría y práctica de digitalizado y positivado de los negativos

   • Con el aula a oscuras y bajo luz de seguridad roja. Abriremos las cámaras recogidas para ver los negativos resultantes y digitalizarlos. Ya con iluminación normal, procederemos a positivar el negativo con Photoshop y/o con otros programas y aplicaciones. También

   • comentaremos cómo y para qué conservar los negativos que siguen latentes. Una vez tenemos el positivo de la solarigrafía, comentaremos que salidas o formatos podemos realizar para hacerlas visibles y compartirlas.

5.  Ruegos, preguntas y debate

   • Otras técnicas experimentales que surgen a partir de la solarigrafía, como mezclarlas y cómo colaborar y crear obras conjuntas entre los participantes. Veremos referentes relacionados con estos tema

Participants will learn the technique of taking photographs with a large format camera: measuring light, focusing, framing, and tilting and shifting the camera bellows. At the same time, they will be able to immediately see the effect of their work on Polaroid film. The workshop will begin with instructions on using a large format camera in the traditional way using a film cassette (without taking pictures), then instructions on using a set with Polaroid film. At the end, each participant will take their own photo (e.g. a portrait of another participant or an arranged still life) with a large format camera and will be able to take the photo with them.

1. Introduction & Equipment Overview

   • Introduction to large format photography and its unique characteristics.

   • Overview of the equipment: large format camera, lenses, light meter, and adapted Polaroid camera back.

2. Technical Foundations

   • Understanding camera movements: tilting, shifting, focusing, and framing.

   • Measuring light with a light meter and calculating proper exposure.

   • Hands-on practice with a traditional film cassette (without taking photos).

3. Working with Polaroid Film

   • Instructions on using the Polaroid film back.

   • Understanding instant film characteristics and exposure adjustments.

   • Demonstration of the shooting and development process.

4. Hands-On Shooting Session

   • Each participant will take their own photo using the large format camera.

   • Subjects can be a portrait of another participant or a still life arrangement.

   • Immediate review of results and discussion on composition and technique.

5. Wrap-Up & Final Discussion

   • Reviewing and sharing results.

   • Discussion on challenges, learnings, and future applications of large format photography.

   • Participants take home their Polaroid prints.

A Box, a Hole, a Camera! What can a homemade camera do that a smartphone can’t?

In this workshop, we’ll dive into the magic of analog photography. Together, we’ll build pinhole cameras, capture images outdoors, and develop our black-and-white photos in the darkroom. The possibilities are endless, as every step of the process can be adjusted by hand, making each photo unique. It’s all about experimenting, improvising, and exploring.

1. Introduction to the History of the Camera Obscura: Explore the origins of the camera obscura, tracing its development from Ibn Al-Haytham, through the ideas of Leonardo Da Vinci, to Louis Daguerre.

2. Understanding the Science Behind Pinhole Photography: Learn the fascinating physical and chemical processes that make pinhole photography possible, from light behavior to chemical reactions.

3. Building your own Pinhole Camera: Get hands-on as we construct pinhole cameras from simple materials, starting with a small box.

4. Capturing Photographs: Experiment with your newly crafted camera by taking photographs outdoors. Everything is possible, from street photography, portraits and selfies to experimental double exposures

5. Developing Images in the Darkroom: You will develop your black-and-white images and witness the chemical process from start to finish.

This workshop explores the intersection of traditional and modern photography, from large format Polaroid techniques to AI-generated images. Participants will engage in hands-on practice with different photographic methods while reflecting on the concepts of truth and manipulation in photography. At the beginning of the workshop, the artist will present the available equipment to the participants. The artist will demonstrate how to take a Polaroid using a large format camera, how to capture a digital photograph with a large format camera, and how to transfer a digital image onto Polaroid film. Following this, the artist will introduce the possibilities of generating photographs using AI. A demonstration will show how to create an AI-generated image resembling a Polaroid and how to transfer it onto Polaroid film, resulting in a physical Polaroid print created through AI. At this stage, the artist will initiate a discussion on the concepts of truth and falsehood in photography. Together with the participants, a theme for a collective presentation will be selected. The group will then prepare a series of Polaroid photographs, with some captured purely through analogue methods, some created by transferring digital images onto Polaroid, and some entirely generated by AI.

   • Process of transferring the AI-generated image onto Polaroid film to create a physical photograph.

4. Discussion: Truth vs. Manipulation in Photography

   • A group discussion led by the artist on the implications of AI in photography.

   • Exploration of the differences between analogue, digital, and AI-generated images.

5. Collaborative Polaroid Project

   • Participants select a common theme for a collective presentation.

   • Creation of a set of Polaroid photographs using different methods: captured purely through analogue techniques/created by transferring digital images onto Polaroid/entirely generated by AI.

6. Final Reflection & Presentation

   • - Review and discussion of the final set of images.

   • Reflection on the impact of different photographic methods.

   • Participants take home their created Polaroid photographs. 

In this workshop, we will dive into photographic experimentation by combining pinhole photography with contact prints from digital screens to create unique, double-exposure portraits. We will explore how merging analog and digital images can produce unexpected and expressive compositions, pushing the boundaries of traditional photography.Throughout the session, we will learn how to capture portraits with our smartphones, transfer these images onto photographic paper through a contact print from a digital screen, and then expose that same paper inside a pinhole camera to add a second image. Through this hybrid process, we will discover how light and time interact with the materiality of photographic paper, resulting in portraits that blend different visual layers into a single composition.This workshop is designed for those who want to explore new forms of expression in photography, experimenting freely with creative techniques. No prior experience in darkroom processes or pinhole photography is required—just curiosity and a willingness to discover new ways of capturing images.

1. Preparation: We begin by capturing suitable portraits on our smartphones and editing them to fit our project’s artistic vision.

2. First Exposure: In the darkroom, we place black-and-white photo paper briefly over the smartphone screen, creating a contact print. Without developing this first image, we then load the paper into a pinhole camera.

3. Second Exposure: Taking the loaded pinhole camera outdoors, we take a second portrait, creating an overlay on the same photo paper.

   
   

4. Developing: Back in the darkroom, we develop the photo paper to reveal the double exposure—two images merging together on a single sheet.

   
   

5. Play and Experiment: Once you’re familiar with the workflow, you’ll have the freedom to explore the full potential of this technique. Experiment with positive and negative images, try layering different faces, or even create playful compositions with upside-down heads. The possibilities are endless!

Aprenderás cómo captar y positivar sin necesidad de laboratorio químico, los trazos del aparente recorrido del sol día tras día en una sola fotografía analógica. Lo que mágicamente hace visible una bella escena oculta, que el ojo humano no es capaz de captar niretener por sí solo y con una apariencia pictórica de paisaje onírico. Y partiendo de objetos en desuso, construirás y cargaras tus dos cámaras, estenopeica y con lente, analógicas y especiales para solarigrafía la PotCam y la DeconstruccionCam (nuevos formatos),con la segunda durante el taller captaras la primera solarigrafia instantanea y las dos te las llevarás cargadas y listas para realizar tus primeros paisajes solares o SolartiSwap.

   Taller práctico donde reutilizando materiales en desuso, aprenderás y construirás tu cámara con lente DeconstruccionCam, analógica, así como a cargarla y personalizarla, dejándola a punto para captar tu primera solarigrafía.

3. Teoría y Práctica en exterior de colocación de las cámaras construidas.

   Nos trasladaremos a una zona exterior (terrado Pati Llimona) para colocar las cámaras y dejarlas hasta la tarde.

4. Práctica - construcción de cámara estenopeica PotCam y de cómo cargarla.

   Taller práctico donde reutilizando materiales en desuso, aprenderás y construirás tu cámara estenopeica y analógica especial para solarigrafía, así como a cargarla, dejándola a punto para captar tu primera solarigrafía.

5. Teoría y Práctica en exterior de colocación, retirada de cámaras PotCam y retirada de las cámaras DeconstrucccionCam

   Nos trasladaremos a una zona exterior (balcones del Pati Llimona) para hablar de como colocar las cámaras según la localización escogida y cómo proceder para retirarlas de forma práctica, con las que habré colocado unos días o años antes. Retiraremos las DeconstruccionCam.del terrado del Pati lLimona.

6. Teoría y práctica de digitalizado y positivado de los negativos.

   Con el aula a oscuras y bajo luz de seguridad roja. Abriremos las cámaras recogidas para ver los negativos resultantes y digitalizar algunos. Ya con iluminación normal, procederemos a positivar algunos negativos con Photoshop y/o con otros programas y aplicaciones. También comentaremos cómo y para qué conservar los negativos que siguen latentes. Si fuera necesario realizaremos retoques de mejora en las cámaras DeconstruccionCam que lo requieran y las volveremos a cargar con papel nuevo o quien lo prefiera con una solarigrafia de otro compañero para una SolariSwap. Una vez tenemos el positivo de la solarigrafía, comentaremos que salidas o formatos podemos realizar para hacerlas visibles y compartirlas.

7. Ruegos, preguntas y debate

   Otras técnicas experimentales que surgen a partir de la solarigrafía, como mezclarlas y cómo colaborar y crear obras nuevas entre los participantes. Presentar mis proyectos, en la plaza real como ejemplo de reciclaje y CUANDO LOS CERDOS VUELEN como ejemplo de como romper las normas. Veremos referentes relacionados con estos temas.

No es imprescindible pero quien quiera y pueda que se traiga trípode. No es imprescindible pero quien quiera y pueda que se traiga papel fotosensible b/n RC incluso caducado y con dos hojas más que suficiente para el o para compartir, ya que cada papel reacciona de manera diferente. No se requiere de ningún conocimiento fotográfico

This 4-hour workshop will focus on building a functional camera obscura from scratch, allowing participants to learn the process hands-on. Everyone will work together to construct a working camera obscura within the space at Pati Llimona.

This workshop explores the evolution of chronophotography and its impact on the creation of moving images, from early experiments to digital animation. Through a hands-on and experimental approach, participants will work with various techniques and materials to understand the phenomenon of retinal persistence and its application in animation.

1. Introduction to Chronophotography and Animation

   • Explanation of retinal persistence and its influence on motion reproduction.

   • History of early animation: from the phenakistoscope to the zoetrope and praxinoscope.

   • Exploration of Muybridge and Marey's experiments in capturing motion.

2. Creating Animations with Analog Systems

   • Designing and testing animated sequences using the three classic optical animation systems.

   • Drawing and constructing sequences for playback with the phenakistoscope, zoetrope, and praxinoscope.

3. Capturing Motion with Chronophotography

   • Designing and filming sequences in 35mm B/W using motorized reflex cameras.

   • Chemical development and contact printing of the best sequences on silver halide paper.

4. Exploration with Digital Technology

   • While prints dry, repeating the experiment with a small toy digital camera equipped with a thermal printer.

   • Editing and cropping frames to generate animated sequences.

   • Digitizing the animation and creating animated GIFs to share on digital platforms.

5. Comparison and Reflection

   • Analysis of the results obtained through both analog and digital processes.

   • Comparison of visual effects and technical limitations of each method.

   • Discussion on the relevance of chronophotography today and its connection to new animation technologies.

It is recommended to the participant wear clothing and shoes that are expendable or of little importance, given the possibility of stains or inadvertent splashes of chemical products.
