T2. The Fundamentals of Anthotypes
Malin Fabbri
4 HOURS, 24/07 WEDNESDAY IN THE MORNING

In this workshop, we will learn the fundamentals of making anthotypes - the art of making photographs using plants, and evaluate the different emulsions we used. Anthotypes is a process where plants, pigments or dyes are used to make an emulsion and the print is exposed using sunlight. It is a process with endless possibilities since each plant or pigment will make an emulsion unlike any other plant and will yield a unique print. Participants will get a brief overview of the anthotype process. Because of the long exposure times of anthotypes, the main focus will be the practical applications of using plants and pigments to create a print. We will try several plants, and look at the different ways of creating emulsions and different coating techniques. The prints will be exposed to the sun.

Outline

• Introduction to Anthotypes

• Fundamentals of Anthotype Making

• Exploration of Emulsions

• Practical Applications

• Hands-On Activities

• Exposure Process

• Evaluation and Reflection • Conclusion and Next Steps

+ Participants must bring a photograph they want to print. Ideally one of relatively high contrast. If the participant prepare the positive at home they will have more time in the workshop to print. Also: must bring objects for creating a photogram. Ideally flat objects that can fit in a printing frame. If the participants have a specific plant or pigment or dye they would like to try making an emulsion from, they are welcome to bring this too. This is optional.

T18. In-Depth Collaborative Explorations of Anthotypes
Malin Fabbri
8 HOURS, 25/07 THURSDAY ALL DAY

This workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to anthotypes, covering basic techniques and various process variations. Participants will explore creating anthotype emulsions using plants and pigments, each yielding unique prints. The session encourages experimentation, fostering endless creative possibilities. Participants, whether new to anthotypes or experienced, will collaborate to learn and refine their skills. Following preparation of prints, exposure to sunlight will occur. The latter part of the workshop focuses on reflection and evaluation, discussing technical qualities and artistic expression collaboratively. Participants will assess prints, sharing insights on improvement and artistic impact. The session culminates in discussing lessons learned and future experimentation. Attendees are advised to bring a high-contrast photograph or objects for photogram creation.

Outline

• Introduction to Anthotypes

• Exploration of Anthotype Techniques

• Preparation for Photogram Creation

• Hands-On Creation of Anthotype Emulsions

• Printing and Sun Exposure

• Reflection and Evaluation

• Discussion and Lessons Learned

• Conclusion and Next Steps

No prior knowledge is necessary, we will work on different levels according to experience.

T30. Clorotipia: Puzzle de Hojas
Kimberly Halyburton

T50. Bring Colour to Ambrotypes
Stefan Dinu
4 HOURS, 27/07 SATURDAY IN THE AFTERNOON

In this workshop, participants will engage in a series of creative experiments aimed at incorporating digital and AI-generated images into their artistic process. They will explore various methods for enhancing traditional photography techniques with modern technology. Participants will explore the technique of coloring a contact print, which can then be used as a backing to introduce color into their photographs. This process allows for the addition of hues and textures, enhancing the depth and visual appeal of the final images. Additionally, participants will learn how to apply color directly to the silver surface using pigments. This hands-on approach enables participants to experiment with different color palettes and techniques, resulting in unique creations. Finally, participants will discover how to introduce blue coloration into the highlights of their photographs using chemical means.

Outline

• Introduction to Digital and AI-Generated Images

• Exploration of Enhancement Methods

• Technique of Coloring Contact Prints

• Direct Application of Color to Silver Surface

• Introduction of Blue Coloration Using Chemical Means

• Hands-On Experimentation and Creative Exploration

• Discussion and conclusions

+ If participans have their own ambrotypes, could bring for experimenting with colour.

T8. Papel Salado: la Corrosión de la Memoria
Camila Nahien
